what is zantac?

Millions of Americans relied on Zantac to help relieve heartburn, treat ulcers and tame gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). Zantac, also known for its generic name “ranitidine,” was available over the counter or with a prescription sold by major retailers across the nation.

Why is there a drug recall?

September 2019
Zantac has recently been found by the Food & Drug Administration (FDA) for having low yet potentially unacceptable levels of a nitrosamine impurity called N-nitrosodimethylamine (NDMA).

The FDA said, “NDMA is classified as a probable human carcinogen (a substance that could cause cancer) based on results from laboratory tests.”

April 2020
The FDA has asked that all manufacturers immediately withdraw all ranitidine drugs from the market.
