Have you been hurt while working on a Drilling Rig?
Working offshore on an offshore rig can be a very lucrative job. However, anyone who has worked offshore also knows that it can be a very dangerous job. In fact, in recent years, an oil and gas worker loses their life about every three days. A lot of these incidents occur while workers and equipment and the product itself is being transported to and from the worksite. Following the transportation incidents, workers employed as derrick hands and roustabouts complete the top three dangerous jobs in the oil and gas field.
Working offshore on a rig exposes the worker to many dangers. The catastrophic incidents, such as the Deepwater Horizon catastrophe, are widely reported in the news. There are, however, injuries that occur every day on rigs across the world that do not receive and news coverage, even though the injuries are no less catastrophic to the worker than some of those received in incidents such as the Deepwater Horizon.
Injuries commonly occur on rigs due to a wide variety of hazards. These include fire, tripping hazards that cause slip and falls, exposure to chemicals including H2S – Hydrogen Sulphide, swinging and falling equipment, lifting dangers, electrical hazards, extreme noise, electrical dangers, climbing hazards, crane, derrick and hoist hazards, confined space hazards, as well as exposure to asbestos and other cancer-causing materials, found onboard the rigs and in some of the materials used, including the drilling mud. Any of these hazards can cause catastrophic injuries if they are encountered by an offshore worker.
When injuries occur offshore, the injured worker should first seek medical attention, but, thereafter, as soon as possible, consult with an experienced attorney to protect all of the rights afforded to offshore workers. There are many different laws that may apply to incidents involving workers on rigs offshore. Among the different laws that could apply are the Jones Act, the Outer Continental Shelf Lands Act, and the death on the High Seas Act. Because the location of the injury, the type of rig on which the injury occurred, the location of the rig and the type of injury all could affect the law which applies, you need to retain an experienced attorney to assist you in protecting your rights and recovering those damages to which you are entitled. Workers on offshore rigs have the right to seek compensation for injuries they receive which were caused by negligence or an unseaworthy condition. This negligence or unseaworthy condition can be something caused by the negligence of a fellow employee, by the company or its policies, or by the condition of the rig or the equipment onboard. Injuries offshore quickly add up, from medical costs that skyrocket, and which could continue into the future, in addition to the loss of wages and can include the strain and anguish that the injury places on the injured worker.
Maritime injury claims resulting from work on an offshore rig are complex claims, and in order for you to fully protect yourself and obtain the benefits to which you are entitled, you need an attorney who is familiar with the complexities of the many different state and federal laws that could apply to offshore injuries, and who is able to navigate the different laws’ myriad of requirements in order to obtain the compensation that is owed as a result of injuries received due to the negligence of others. Our lawyers have decades of experience in handling personal injury claims and know the laws and regulations that govern offshore workers. We represent injured workers from across the entire United States Gulf Coast, as well as the rest of the country. We stand ready to assist you in your claim for all of the benefits and compensation that you deserve as the result of an accident suffered offshore.
